The 2025 Season Ends

The 2025 season quietly fizzled out at the weekend, with the weather deciding we’d had quite enough fun and put paid to any hopes of a final hurrah.

Now, if you look at the league tables alone, you might think this wasn’t a vintage year for the club. And strictly speaking, the tables don’t lie… but they don’t always tell the full story either. The First XI grew stronger as the season wore on, the Second XI fought tooth and nail to avoid the drop (and did so with a bit to spare), while the Third XI enjoyed a superb summer. Add to that the emergence of a very talented group of youngsters, perhaps our best crop in years, and the future looks bright indeed.

The Colts and Ladies teams also continue to evolve with the excellent Under 15s making a regional final and the ladies making the Quarter Final of the Hampshire Cup. These sections are vital to the club continuing to thrive, so it’s fantastic to see them growing and improving.

We’ve already got one eye on the winter, with plans for new faces, a refreshed committee, and a bit of rebuilding. So while 2025 might not be carved into the history books as our greatest ever season, it could well be remembered as the one where the seeds of something special were planted. I have a very strong feeling, it will be.

As I step down as chairman, I’d like to say how proud I am that, despite the ups and downs, we always managed to field sides – and often with players to spare. That’s no small feat in a tough season and says a lot about the commitment within this club. However, after more than a decade in the hot seats, both Peter and I feel the time is right to hand the baton on. A touch of fatigue had started creeping in, and we’d rather leave before we’re carried out.

For some of you, cricket rolls on with the indoor league. For all of you, there’s the AGM coming up soon – your chance to stand, vote, and help shape the club’s future. Date to be confirmed, but sharpen your pencils.

So, a big thank you to everyone – committee members, players, volunteers, and not least the long-suffering partners who tolerate the endless Saturdays. You’ve all played your part, and it doesn’t go unnoticed.

Winter well and as someone who will stay involved at the club, I look forward to seeing many of you at the close season social events.

Cheers
