Match Report – Oakley CC 1st XI vs Odiham & Greywell CC 3rd XI

Oakley secured maximum points on Saturday with a convincing 106-run victory over Odiham & Greywell, posting an imposing 313 before bowling the visitors out for 207 in the 44th over.

Pre-Match Build-Up

Before play had even begun, attention turned to the day’s first major prize: the warm-up football shirt competition. Congratulations went to Ben (Well Good) Weller-Evans, whose shirt was unanimously voted the best on show. Sadly, this would prove to be the peak of his day until a few jagerbombs in the evening. A game of fine margins.

In what may go down as one of the season’s least believable moments, Dan Jones finally won a toss and, clearly not wanting to waste the rare occasion, elected to bat first on what looked an excellent surface.

Oakley Innings: 313 All Out (45 Overs)

Openers Michael Wood and Patrick Saines got Oakley underway, though Paddy’s innings came to an abrupt and frankly ridiculous end. Attempting to sweep a ball that was somewhere between “very wide” and “not actually on the pitch”, he somehow managed to get out. It was the sort of dismissal that makes teammates laugh immediately and sympathise later. Possibly.

With Paddy gone, Nathan Scarff joined Woody and the pair settled things nicely, putting away anything loose and moving the score along at a healthy rate. Nath briefly survived what looked a very good delivery from one of Odiham’s younger bowlers, only for the umpire to reveal salvation in the form of a no-ball. Unfortunately, cricket is cruel, and the same youngster returned a few balls later to bowl him properly this time. No reprieve, no controversy, just a long walk back.

Woody and Will Take Charge

Woody and Will Cheyney then took control of the innings, batting positively while still keeping things sensible (always useful in village cricket where “sensible” usually means not trying to hit every ball into the next parish). The pair ran hard between the wickets and punished bad bowling, with the score beginning to rattle along.

Woody looked set for a big score before producing one of the more creative dismissals seen at Oakley for some time, somehow managing to hit the ball onto his own pad, which then diverted onto the stumps. Technically unlucky. Also deeply stupid.

Will, meanwhile, carried on in style, passing fifty and eventually making an excellent 77 from 56 balls, including eight fours and four sixes. By this point Odiham’s enthusiasm in the field was beginning to fade at roughly the same speed as Oakley’s score was climbing.

Late-Order Contributions

Useful cameos followed from Ian Bennett (43), Alex Brundle (30) and DJ (12), helping Oakley to a commanding 313 all out from 45 overs. The visitors also chipped in generously with 51 extras, proving that hospitality in village cricket is very much alive.

Odiham Reply: 207 All Out (44 Overs)

Chasing 314 was always going to be a sizeable ask and things quickly became harder for Odiham when Stefan Kaltner struck early. From there, wickets fell reasonably regularly, although opener Liam Schooling had clearly not read the script.

Schooling batted superbly throughout, combining patience with attacking strokes while wickets tumbled around him. Supported in patches by Drew Birch (24) and Safwan Mohammed (23), he kept Odiham vaguely interested long after most had begun mentally preparing the BBQ.

Schooling Falls One Short

And then came cricket at its absolute cruellest.

Having batted beautifully all afternoon, Liam looked certain for a deserved hundred before eventually falling for 99, brilliantly caught by Stef. It was a superb innings and a genuinely brutal way to miss out on three figures, though, naturally, sympathy levels from the Oakley fielders remained impressively low.

With the danger (pain in the arse) man gone, Oakley wasted little time cleaning up the tail, eventually bowling Odiham out for 207 in the 44th over. DJ finished with four wickets, combining this with a toss win to produce what can only be described as a career day. Medical checks are ongoing.

Match Summary

A strong all-round performance secured maximum points for Oakley, with standout contributions from Will Cheyney (77 & 2 wickets), DJ (4 wickets) and Liam Schooling (99) in defeat.

Post-Match BBQ Report

Attention then turned to the post-match BBQ, once again bravely operated by Woody. Early reports suggest the burgers were edible and the chicken was cooked, which should count as another victory.
