History Made in B340 Derby

Report by Deano James

On a clear sunny day over at Newfound
history was to be made.

First off Kris unfortunately couldn’t captain us this week, so Ollie was elected as stand in skipper as last week’s captain, Bob, was on grandad duties and watching his own son smash a ton.

Ollie lost the toss and to our surprise Overton put us into bat. A decision I think they might live to regret. Opening the batting for Oakley was Savage and Ryan. Overton took the early wicket of Ryan with Oakley at 6-1. In came Dan Beckell.

Next wicket to fall for Oakley was Savage. Savage to a swipe at it. We were all thinking it could of gone for 6 until a young 11 year old lad who was under it had a quick audition for Zippo circus as part of their juggling act took the catch.Oakley were 58/2

Next in was Chippy. He batted as he always does. Pretty solid with a few good boundaries. Unfortunately he was given out LBW. Which meant now we were 100/3.

In came the Nick Green to partner Dan. Now with Nick getting in the 30s last week and Dan having had a few good knocks this season, the Oakley players just sat back and watched. With Dan passing 50 and Nick in the 30s it was all looking great the unfortunately Dan got caught. Oaks 137/4. This brought Deano to the crease.

Deano is a mild mannered guy who has so far this season this got 4 golden ducks and a 1 in 5 innings and has never got double figures in his whole Oakley career. So as expected Lee was padded up ready to walk in a ball or two later. But what no one expected, not even Deano himself, was that he saw out his first couple of delivers before getting off the mark. At the other end Nick thought he’d better Start having some fun as we might be all out very soon.

However to everyones amazement and even to Deano, he rocketed on to 3 whilst Nick at the other end was on about 50. With 3 to his nam Deano would have been happy with his highest score of the season but scored another seven off a few deliveries. However things got better when he edged a 4. Ravi shouted out nice shot Deano however Nick didn’t agree and shouted back no it effing wasn’t.

Cheers for the confidence boost. Whilst Deano was playing a good supporting role, he kept hitting boundaries and running 1s and 2s. All of a sudden Deano got his first double figures for Oakley and had 10, whilst at this point Nick must of been on about 80 odd. Now whilst these two settled things down the score kept rocking up.

Nick then made history as he became the 1st ever 3rd team player to score 100. Well done young man. Nick eventually got out for 117 being bowled, him and Deano had stuck on a 5th wicket partnership of 124. In came Lee and we only had 1.5 overs to go. He faced 5 balls for a solid 0*. With an over to go Deano was determined not to get out and managed to bag himself another 2 runs to finish on 21 not out.

With a score of 265 to win for Overton Oaks had to make sure they bowled well. Opening the bowling for Oakley was Noah and Ravi. Ravi got out both their openers. He bowled Sam Cross out with his deadly spin and Lee took a good catch to remove their other opener.

On came Lee for Noah and Ollie for Ravi. Ollie bowled his usual way and got knocked for a boundary in his first over to his delight. However he did seem pick up 2 wickets himself. Lee then got straight in to the action as he got a couple of wickets for with the help of a good catch from Dan for one of them.

Overton seemed to be getting into their stride so Ollie changed the bowling again bringing on Phil to replace Lee. It worked as in his 5 overs he had 2 maidens and 1 wicket. Also James came into the attack for the skipper Ollie. James bowled really well in his 7 overs only going for 13 runs and himself and Savage combined twice to get two stumpings.

To finish off the game Dan came on to take the final wicket. He in his 1.1 overs was showing Noah how to take wickets at Newfound.  Overall it was a brisk day for all the players and they could go back to the club for beers and burgers. On to next week. Lets hope Kris is back and the Oaks can put on another good performance.

Up the Oaks!
