First XI Win Again!

Cheyney Spins Oaks into Control

The First XI moved off the bottom of the table at the weekend with a fine win over Alton 3s.

Alton batted first and, despite a solid 50 from Kodithuwakku, they never really broke free as the Oaks chipped away. The star of the show was spinner Will Cheyney, who tore through the order with an excellent return of 5 for 23 from 8 overs. Further wickets came from Greig Spires, Dan Jones and Harry Tucknott, while sharp fielding saw Will Rabley and Alex Brundle claim run-outs. Alton were bowled out for 200 — a competitive score, though the Oaks’ record chasing totals this season meant it was still in the balance.

DJ Steers Chase Home

The reply began shakily, with Nigel Bishop and Alex Brundle falling early to leave the Oaks wobbling at 15-2. A rebuilding effort came through Greg Spires (31), Steve Bown (39) and Will Cheyney (46), but more wickets meant nerves were jangling again. For the second week running, skipper Dan Jones held firm, guiding The Oaks to victory with a composed unbeaten 30. The Oaks got home by two wickets in what was a hard-fought chase and a deserved win.

Building for the Future

Although recent wins have come too late to avoid the drop, they have boosted confidence in what was always going to be a reset season following injuries and departures. With four victories now secured in a tough division, the Oaks can look forward to bouncing back strongly next year.

For now, the last few games will provide more valuable chances for players to develop and finish the season on a positive note.
