Early Pressure Sets the Tone
Saturday saw The Oaks entertain Ramsdell 1st XI at Oakley Park on a properly Baltic afternoon, with both sides hoping the forecast rain might somehow be wrong for once. It wasn’t.
Oakley bowled first and immediately turned the screw through Harry Tucknott and Stef Kaltner, who ripped through the top order in an excellent opening spell. The Oaks had identified two danger men before the game: Jonny Bradley and former Hook first teamer Liam Shore.
Bradley was removed cheaply, much to everyone’s delight, but Shore proved rather less cooperative. Batting superbly in difficult conditions, he compiled an excellent 78 before DJ finally trapped him LBW. It was a genuine match-saving innings in a game otherwise dominated by The Oaks, so fair play to him, even if nobody particularly enjoyed watching it at the time.
Ramsdell were eventually dismissed for 183, a score that felt below par. On a dry summer afternoon, it would have been a chase very much within Oakley’s grasp.
Rain Gods Strike Again
Unfortunately, the rain that every weather app in existence had been screaming about all day eventually arrived with perfect timing. Covers came on, players trudged off, and it was goodnight Vienna, heaters on clubhouse door shutting out the Baltic air.
It was another frustrating case of the weather gods intervening just as things were nicely set up for The Oaks. Rumours that several Oakley players have now started ignoring weather apps for the good of their own mental health.
Still, there were plenty of positives to take. After three matches, The Oaks sit joint top of the table and look firmly in the mix for promotion back to County 3. Tougher tests undoubtedly lie ahead, but strong squad depth, plenty of experience, and a group who have played together for years should stand the club in good stead over the season.
And if summer ever decides to arrive, even better.
